Thinking of film school?

August 27th, 2010

If you have always dreamed of making your own films, you might be considering whether or not you should apply for a place at a film production school. Before applying, the first thing you should do is work out exactly where in the film industry you wish to work. Do you want to be a director, production manager or work with props?

One you have decided which area you would like to go into, you should start researching schools and colleges which offer appropriate courses. Look for a school with a good reputation in your required field.

When you actually get to film school, you will be required to work extremely hard. It is the job of a film crew to create beautiful, interesting films and you will get plenty of experience of this. The majority of film schools will require you to take the brunt of the cost of creating your own films, and this does not come cheap. Things like props, casts and film itself are all expensive. Of course, there are ways to save money – use friends as cast, hire props from us at Keeley Hire, but you are going to need considerable funds whilst attending school.

However, the cost of the course and the added extras is worth it for the skills, experience and opportunities you will gain. You are more likely to be successful in your field if you attend a film school. It is also more likely that you will obtain work in the film industry with some qualifications and experience behind you.

Stage props and theatre sets

August 14th, 2010

Stage props and theatre sets are used in the theatre to add interest to a play. Props, when used effectively, can enrich the plot and help bring characters to life. Props come in many forms and have different uses; whether it is a gun or a chair. It is possible to stage a play with no props and no theatre set. In fact, it is common for many Shakespeare plays to be performed without any props, using only period costume. This is fine with Shakespeare, because the audience are there to hear the dialogue, so, providing it is acted well, this can work. However, in most cases, having a good set of props and an interesting backdrop can help improve the overall show.

Having a good theatre set can be a helpful way of adding extra interest into your production and it can also help the actors to get into character. This in turn helps them to act out their parts in a much more convincing way. For instance, if your play is a scary horror story, having a dark, oppressive castle or woodland as a backdrop will enhance the feeling of terror the audience will feel, making your play more successful. At Keeley Hire, we understand that buying theatre sets can be very expensive. This is why we offer a range of sets and props for hire, allowing you to create the perfect setting for your play without blowing the budget.

Hand Props

January 11th, 2010

The most obvious results of a theatre designer’s work are the theatre sets. Often the set designer is also responsible for designing a production’s costumes, and some of these are certainly very striking. However, an area that often gets overlooked by audience and critics alike is hand props. That is, as the name suggests, portable props.

We at Keeley Hire have a wide range of these props included in the over half a million items we have in stock. As any fashionable lady will tell you, accessories make an outfit. Perhaps the most important of these is a bag or purse, and it goes without saying that we have a large selection of these. Included in our selection are many leather items in all shapes and sizes.

When people think of portable props, they tend to think of smaller items, but some portable items are anything but small. A good example of this is bicycles. Again we have a large selection of these, including gents’, ladies’ and children’s. They cover a wide variety of dates and locations.

Other items we have include coins, china and cutlery. We also carry a variety of tools for all trades and professions.

Different historical periods will have different props as commonplace. For example, oil burning lamps may not be popular today but if you’re going back to the nineteenth century and beyond they are an essential.

Whatever the prop, we at Keeley Hire probably have it. Our website only shows a fraction of our props.
