Almost every kid goes through a pirate stage, where swashbuckling captains and talking parrots hold a special fascination. Picture a typical street scene from suburban America. Now, picture the same scene, but this time make your street a normal British one, say in the northern suburbs of Greater London or somewhere in Bristol. The differences are subtle but they are there. Sometimes we recognise where a film or a play is set before a single word is spoken, because of a tiny visual clue that might not be at all important to the story.
The people who choose props for shows and movies know how to use details to inform the viewer. A classic American-style fire hydrant can tell us that the scene we’re looking at is in a US city, for example. Seeing a suit of armour propped up against a stone wall tells us that we’re in a castle even if we never get so much as a glimpse of the battlements and the drawbridge.
It doesn’t take much prompting to set our imaginations to work, and that’s why film props are so important. They can tell the viewer where they are in time and space and set the tone as well. A carefully chosen prop or two can let anybody who sees it know that they’re in for a thrilling horror movie or an adventurous romp through the African savannah.
