The position of stage manager is a very important one. They are a vital part of the theatre team and are often in communication with all other departments during the course of the show. The stage manager probably has more responsibilities than anyone else in the production team. They have many far reaching responsibilities including props design, theatre sets, getting the right scenery, creating advertising, helping to choose the right actors and even scheduling rehearsals.
However, the most difficult task the stage manager has on their hands is to manage the cast. The cast all have their roles to play, and each one important in staging the perfect production. One wrong move from anyone could completely ruin the show and disappoint the audience. It will be the stage manager’s responsibility to ensure the actors know what they are doing and where they need to be at any given time. In rehearsals, they will use tape on the stage to mark out where all the props will be placed so that they can correctly position themselves. They will take note of these and offer suggestions on every move that an actor makes on stage; every step will be accounted for. They will also help actors to run lines and perfect their acting.
Whilst rehearsals are taking place, the stage manager will also be hiring and creating the perfect props. They will also be rigging up lighting and any other special effects.
