Short Films Need Great Props

May 17th, 2011

Props help to set the scene. It’s not just big budget productions we supply props to; we also spend a great deal of time helping amateur dramatic societies, educational programmes and private clients find the right props for their production. Perhaps one of our most prominent sectors of growth is in the field of short films. By short films we mean things like university projects, information shorts, website videos and so on.

Clients producing short films tend to be less interested in theatre set-sized props, and more in those vital basics that can make all the difference. For example, let’s say you’re shooting a ten-minute zombie movie short for a university project. Sets are no trouble – the woods, your university bedroom, you’ll figure something out! But the props can create a more dynamic story. Think along the lines of simple basics like severed limbs, authentic-looking weapons and so on.

Professional prop hire is a fantastic way to add priceless new dimensions to your short film. If you’re not 100% sure of the best props to invest in, get in touch with our prop-mad experts and have a chat about what we’ve got in stock or might be able to source for you. We take prop hire seriously (as seriously as you can take an industry that promotes the use of giant polystyrene dinosaur claws), so our guys really are experts in the field.

So, what props do you think your short film needs to take it from low-budget blunder to indie hit?

Pictures and Their Thousand Words: Photography and Props

January 20th, 2011

Photography, particularly art photography, can be incredibly difficult to define. We see photography in the form of family snaps, magazine prints, newspapers and so on, which only goes to show the fantastic versatility of photography.
The context of a photograph is incredibly important. Meanings can be lost, altered, heightened, subdued or created using the same image under varying context.

Take the work we did some time ago with Glamour magazine and Jane Goldman on a Stardust-themed magazine photo shoot. The premise was to create a photo shoot tying Jane in with the movie she so tirelessly worked on. Since we worked on the Stardust set in 2007, Keeley Hire was the ideal choice for authentic movie props that added vital context to the set of images. Glamour didn’t simply want a series of shots of Jane amongst historical props; the context of the images was added using genuine movie props from the Stardust set and Glamour’s concurrent interview and feature piece.

Magazine photo shoots are only a small part of what can be accomplished using our props. Our photography clients typically (or atypically depending on how you look at it) hire props for unique portraits, fan events (e.g. sci-fi conventions, fantasy fairs), and artificial additions to point-and-shoot photography projects (e.g. social photography experiments like placing unusual objects in public places and photographing the free interaction of individuals).

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Make sure your images speak clearly using our quality props and setting tools.

Prop Care Guide

January 14th, 2011

On a production of any size, props and their care are paramount. Clearly identifying who takes care of props, who uses them and who’s responsible for their supervision can help your production run more efficiently, free from the stresses and emotional meltdowns associated with those moments when everybody realises that collection of bicycles WASN’T for folks to borrow at their leisure to nip to the shop, but was in fact rented from us for your production…. and now three of them are missing.

Store props safely and securely

Elementary as it may sound, taking the proper precautions when it comes to safeguarding even the smallest of props is vital. Particularly small productions sometimes suffer a little when it comes to storage space.

However, if you lose a prop or it becomes damaged through poor storage, it creates a troublesome situation for all of us.

Create a schedule

Film and stage props are more likely to be lost or damaged when left lying around or unused for long periods of time. Create a schedule and do your best to stick to it, keeping stage props and other components out of harm’s way as much as possible.

Handle with care

Some larger film and stage props can be dangerous when handled incorrectly. Avoid letting folks on set mess about with props. We know how tempting it is to dress-up in our hired suits of armour and play knights (you should see our warehouse), but safety and sensibility should always come first.

Putting on a show as a props person

August 30th, 2010

Putting on a show is not an easy task. In order to succeed you will need to be patient, methodical, and organised. You will need to expect the unexpected and be able to think on your feet. No matter how many times you stage a dress rehearsal, or how many props you source, something will always go wrong. However, if you are up to the challenge, putting on a show can be very rewarding indeed.

Props are used in most stage plays, and are very important in most shows. They can be simple objects such as a basket or a book, or they can be more elaborate items, like a katana sword or a machine gun. As a props person, it will be your job to source all the props needed for the show. Most props people tend to make their own props, or hire them from a company like ours, Keeley Hire, because it is much cheaper than buying everything you will need. Many items can also be difficult to track down.

Sourcing props can sometimes be difficult because, you will need to ensure that they are exactly right for the show. If the show is set in, for example, the 17th century, you will need to find appropriate props which are either from that time period or replicate pieces from that period. If you do not get the right props, your show will be less believable, and much less enjoyable for the audience. Fictional worlds should allow the viewer to become immersed in them, and so the stage must be set properly if the illusion is to be maintained.

Props Play An Important Role

April 14th, 2010

In order to pull off a successful production, it is of the utmost importance that your set is perfectly designed and your stage props are of the best quality available. Dressing the stage well is the key to creating a visually stunning piece of theatre which will wow the audience and have them talking about your show for years to come.

Unlike the scenery and stage decoration, a theatre prop is a piece of the set which is designed to be used. Apart from enriching the scenery and creating a great set, props are often a vital tool in contributing to the story and can often be an integral part of the production. Some would even say that the props are just as important as the actors and the production team in staging a successful show.

These days prop hire is much more commonplace than buying props outright. This is a much more cost effective choice for the production company and also allows the production to have access to a much wider range of props than ever before.

Prop hire in the UK has branched out a lot in recent years and companies such as ours at Keeley Hire not only supply props for use on the stage and screen, but can also provide props for use at parties and corporate events. For anyone who is looking to make a big impact with their event, prop hire is a great solution which will set them apart from competitors or make their special day that much more exciting.
