In the early days of film making, the crews responsible for movie props which had served their purpose would simply store them away in a warehouse until they would be used again. If there was no need for them, they would be thrown away, but all that has changed over the last fifty years or so. There is now a huge global industry which revolves around the sale of movie props and stage props.
This industry has grown out of the demand by collectors who want to get their hands on the lightsabres from Star Wars, or the helmet worn by Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan. These items are expensive to buy, of course, but there are many other less high profile props which are bought and sold by film buffs all over the world. While some of these collectors are in it purely to make money from what they see as an investment in movie props, there is also a section of buyers who just want to own something which has appeared in a major film and been seen by millions of people on the big screen.
The main reason why stage props and movie props are purchased is, of course, to use them in plays and films. It’s unlikely that the pioneers of movie props all those years ago ever thought that they would now be changing hands for vast sums of money when all they wanted to do was enhance a scene.

Movie props are integral to creating a realistic environment on screen, and therefore they exist across all genres of film. However, it is in the science fiction genre in particular that props seem to become truly iconic and even become the stars of the show in their own right.
Star Wars
Perhaps the best loved series of films and certainly the most prolific in terms of iconic movie props, Star Wars was packed full of movie props that that have gone down in history. The most famous of these is obviously the lightsaber, yet there were plenty of others, from Han’s laser pistol to Darth Vader’s helmet.
Star Trek
Just like Star Wars, Star Trek was full of great movie props, which were not just there to create a sense of realism, but existed to show the viewer what the future of space travel could potentially look like. Some notable examples of Star Trek props include the phaser and the universal translator.
TV Sci Fi Props
Its not all about the big screen, as props have played an equally important role when it came to TV science fiction. Some familiar examples of these include the TARDIS from Doctor Who, and Rover from the Prisoner, which became one of the scariest villains in 60s science fiction despite being a giant balloon.
It is perhaps the nature of science fiction that makes it so dependent on props, as rather than creating sets that we recognise, Sci Fi props are made as suggestions for what may be in the future.

The first plays were modest affairs, consisting mostly of dialogue. Even famous venues, like Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, were often devoid of props. Whilst this would obviously create a certain dramatic effect, it was perhaps borne out of necessity rather than the creative will of a director. In the modern era, however, prop hire companies have transformed both stage and screen, which has given directors an untold wealth of props to draw upon to enhance atmosphere and audience immersion.
Of course, while there is no replacement for good direction, good props can really elevate a production, and give it certain qualities which make it watchable or realistic. On a similar note, it is possible for props to transcend their function and to become icons in their own right – there is a whole pantheon of these from film, whether it is a lightsaber from Star Wars or the TARDIS from Dr Who.
